New but not new, this rock was collected on our first trip down to the hills of Dumfries and Galloway, where we got very wet, very muddy, and found some rocks that were not as cool as we thought when we cleaned them up. However, this was one of the better of the very heavy and large Scottish crystals that we found.
This rock weighs almost 1.4kg. It features the purple of Scottish amethyst crystals clustered together in sort of druzy formation on on open end of the seam, on the other the crystals protrude in that kind of cauliflower looking, round bump. These look more yellow, as if they are limonite stained. There is a high presence of iron in the matrix rock. There are probably otherm inerals in there which we can't see from the outside.
I had intended to slice this one up. I have intended to slice it up since about 2021. I don't think it's happening. There are too many agates to slice to disturb big specimens like this.
Full isclosure: she is a litty dusty from being in the bottom of a house moving box for the last few months. I just did a video already, but I will wash it again to get some of the dirt off. It could use a little love in terms of preparation. I really need to buy a new ultrasonic cleaner.
Anyway, lots of minerals which have formed in a gap between rocks, leading to a coated pocket, or small vug, which has become infilled with druzy quartz, amethyst, and other good stuff. I believe you get molybdenite near to the area where this was found.
This is a hefty chunk. Long may it bring its new owner pleasure.
