This large chunk of chert is black in colour under that grey to white skin. It is a bit like opal podge on the outside. Once you get under the skin it is distinctively different from the other pieces of chert that we find in South Ayrshire. While they seem to be mainly chalcedony, this material seems different inside. It hits like obsidian - as flint should - and we are unsure. It may be pitchstone but let's play it safe and say its chert.
This material will be perfect for bushcraft or for knapping arrowheads or knives. It is easy to chip away at, perfect for creating a point with. It also polishes beautifully should you wish to do tha lapidary work on it.
We had intended on tumbling this ourselves but changed our mind when we started listing today. This piece ways 137g or thereabouts.
