This is a Scottish Mineral specimen that is fairly small and is in a small free floating frame where you seal the rock between clear plastic for display. I like this method of mineral display because you get a 360 view of the rock sample, and because you can open the frame and remove it with no impact on the specimen. The frames are 2 inches by two inches roughly.
The lava beds in old Ayrshire cooled really slowly and that slow speed allowed bubbles of gases to get trapped in it. Over time, those lil bubbles became filled with sediment, which became sedimentary stone, and then eventually it eroded out, probably through natural erosion or the many farmers in Ayrshire working the land.
This mineral specimen from those old lava beds features black to grey basalt, Amygdaloidal is the name for the slow cooling, vesicular means it has vesicles - gas bubbles which later filled with in this case a nice bubbly (botryoidal) chalcedony. Chalcedony being the main crystalline substance found in Agate and also a variety of microcrystalline quartz.
The commercial name for these stones is Galaxy Stone, because the bubbles against the black basalt looks like a galaxy.
