Stem Rock 1lb Starter Rock Tumbler
This is the smaller version of the Stem rock tumbler which we use, which takes 2.5lbs. While smaller, this looks just as sturdy. We have not personally used this one but it does get 4/5 stars on Amazon. Reviewers like the durability, the adjustable speed and the ability to set a timer. It also comes with a pause button.
We don't like thep lastic barrel and we don't like hten oise. We do like the price point. If you are looking for a cheap rock tumbler to start tumbling stones with, and if you have a shed, garage, or a spare room with a cupboard you can hide it in, then this is a must-buy.
We recommend the STEM rock 1lb tumbler for people who want an affordable rock tumbler for beginners. It will let you experience rock tumbling for a fraction of the price of a pro model.
The Starter Rock Tumbler: Nat Geo
If you choose to go one model up, you can get a National Geographic rock tumbler for not much more cost than the budget-friendly Stemrcok. Certainly this is the most affordable Nat Geo rock polishing machine.
In the box, you get five different jewellery fastening, enough grits and polishing powder to get through a rock tumbler cycle, and 227g worth of rough rocks for you to practice on. There are nine different varieties of rock to discover.
Suitable for ages 3 and up, this rock tumbler comes with the Amazon 30-day returns guarentee. This is a brilliant begineer's rock tumbler kit for those new to lapidary work.
We particularly like National Geographic because every purchase funds their effort to make the world a better place through learning, sharing, and exploring. They also have the best customer service you can find in the rock tumbling world.
STEMrock Rock Tumbler
The STEMrock professional rock tumbler has more than double the barrel capacity of its predecessor, mentioned above. This is designed for heavier use.
This professional rock tumbler is excellent for beginners and for more experienced lapidary artists. We would recommend that you start off a model or size down from the professional rock tumblers. This particular model won't turn if you overload the barrel, for example. It's more expensive to fix one of these if you make a mistake.
That being said, the STEMrock pro is a reliable, large-barrelled rock tumbler which gives the rocks plent of room to move around. We have been using this model for months now to no problems. Touch wood.
The STEMrock Professional tumbler comes with enough rocks to get you started. It has a small pair of jewellery pliers, some copper wire, a baby screwdriver, replacement belts, jewellery findings including a keyring, earrings, ring, and a necklace, and includes ceramic beads and tumbling grits. The ceramic beads are a nice extra touch. They help cause friction in the barrel, giving a nicer shine. All-in-all the STEMrock is a great deal.

Shopping for Rock Tumbler Barrels?
If you are lookin for new barrels for your rock tumbler, we recommend that you choose a rubber barrel. These are quieter options for home rock polishing machines. If noise is not a concern, then a plastic barrel will add to the friction while polishing the rocks - no bad thing.
We do sell the occasional rock tumbler barrel when we buy a new system. Otherwise, we pick them up either from Amazon or from local suppliers if we can find one. It is hard to find local suppliers of lapidary materials in the uk.
The Standard Rubber Rock Tumbler Barrel
If you want a replacement rubber barrel for your National Geographic rock tumbler, you have two options. You can go to a UK rock tumbling specialist and ask them if they have one. We are not experts in selling rock tumblers. Alternatively, pop onto Amazon.com via the link below and pick up one from outside the country.
This rubberl rock tumbler barrel was made for the National Geographic hobby rock tumbler. It is the only one we could find on Amazon which was specifically made to match what we consider the standard size of rubber barrel, roughly 2.5lbs.
Just a heads up: this will cost extra postage than what you are used to. Around a tenner. Fortunately the barrels are about a tenner cheaper.
The XL Rubber Rock Tumbler Barrel
One of our first purchases for the rock tumbler in 2026 was this extra large barrel for our biggest machine: the Evans Dual. We will cover this particular machine when we get around to it. If you plan on stepping up rock tumbling to a commercial level, this is the machine we would recommend.
Unfortunately, the dual comes with two 1.5lb plastic barrels, which we are in the process of selling. The plastic is too noisy for our rock room tumblers. We have been using the rubber barrel from National Geographic until now - but the XL barrel from the STEMrock tumbler works best. In order to run both machines at the same time, we needed the extra barrel.
The XXL Rubber Rock Tumbler Barrel
Again, this is an excellent barrel for large scale or commercial rock polishing. It has a 3lbs capcity but provides extra room for the rocks to move around in. The more the rocks move, the less time it takes to tumble them and the better the shine is.
We don't want to do the math on it, but over time these bigger barrels could potentially shave time off each tumble step. Essentially this would save you money on electricity and on wear and tear.
Full disclosure is that we haven't bought this one ourselves yet. We are eyeing it up for the future. It stands out because of the 4.9/5 stars rating.
