I often find this material in the local river while walking the dog. Once in a while I bring them home. At first I thought they were a spotted jasper but soon realised they were not and stopped picking them up. I recently got a correct ID on this material as Rhyolite.
This is an igneous rock that features crystals floating in the liquid magma before it hardens into rocks. You end up with cool dots and squares inside the stone.
There are four chunks at the moment. This material takes a nice polish and I do tumble smaller bits. These larger pieces could be sliced and cabbed or smashed up and tumbled. They are also cool when wet if you are looking for rockery rocks.
Each has a different weight and slightly different colouring.
