This is a pretty stone which has a great polish on it. As a tumbled stone, we do not know where it originally came from. However, we can say that it was likely sold as an agate due to the colours. It is not an agate as it has no recognised agate patterns. However, it does have colours which resemble both Scottish agates and the ferruginous quartz I routinely find in the waterways of Ayr.
This piece of quartz tumblestone could be described as ferruginous. Ferruginous just translates to "iron affected", so a ferruginous piece of quartz has pretty colours in it because there were iron oxides in the ground water and sediments which went into producing this quartz when it formed.
Typical iron oxide colours include yellow, red, green, and sometimes a weird blue shade. This piece of quartz has black (usually goethite), red (usually hematite), and a purple-grey colour which again comes from the hematite.
This piece of quartz tumblestone came to the Stone Circle in an old crystal collection which we bought online circa November 2025.
