It was my birthday on July fourth so we headed northwards and checked out a bunch of spots from Edinburgh to Aberdeen. We must have done six or seven locations in the one weekend.

This big ole chunk of purple rock has the sugary look to it that I associate with quartzite but it might be straight iron stained quartz.

This Scottish rock is remarkable because it's fully purple due to those dark red iron oxides.

This piece came from our second stop, which was near Balmerino. It's a lovely place but the mud was up to the dog's knees.

I would love to make pendants out of this but I just don't have good enough equipment. It deserves to be cut into slices and polished, or broken apart and tumbled. A lapidary artist looking for material to slab will be a good fit for this Scottish rock.

This quartzite weighs roughly 400g. It is a nice square shape, ideal for the saw.
