New in as part of a preloved crystal collection generously donated for rehoming, this piece of Whitby Jet is a beauty. Almost triangular in shape, it has a beauty of a black shine to it. The back of the pendant is shiny enough but the front has an immaculate polish which must have been done either by hand or on a cabbing machine or flat lap. It's really, really nice material.

The stone has been drilled on top to add a bale to it. The bale and the clasp are both silver but I do not think it is sterline. You could always replace the chain if you have an allergy to nickel.

This necklace came with a note to say that the original pieces of jet were sourced from Robin Hood's Bay near Whitby, were hand collected and then polished by the man who sells them there, or who used to sell them, since this is preloved.

RRP for this Whitby Jet necklace is £28.00. Obviously we will reduce that as a resale of a preloved mineral specimen.

Whitby Jet began about 183 million years ago in an extreme weather climate for the time. These created perfect conditions to turn the old tree roots and branches into a mineraloid, hence Whitby Jet.

We don't have a blog about Jet yet but watch this sapce. It would be interesting to learn how it formed in a scientific way.
