There is a certain type of sparkling, glittering rock for which the word 'drusy' doesn't describe it. It looks like when you see the lamplight reflected in the untouched snow and you catch all the sparkles. It looks like it has had a dusting of grated glass - not that it is sharp. It looks like the sugar left on your fingers when you eat a donut... So I shall call this sugar quartz. Please do not eat the rocks.
This non-edible rock has a pink hue to it, probably due to the presence of iron oxides in the soil when it formed. When we have this pink colour we usually put it down to manganese but hematite can also give a light reddish tone. The matrix this sugary quartz is balanced on has that pink touch. This Scottish crystal also has a few small patches of orange siderite crystals. Otherwise, the only thing to report is that we collected it from down south in the hills of Dumfriesshire. This mineral specimen was picked up years ago. We didn't list straight away because we never knew what made it pink.
