Fossils and Petrified Wood

Back in the early days of Stone Circle history, Katriona found an old disused quarry with some of the best crinoid stems you have ever seen in it. We have been back there once. We do not often collect fossils. When we do, though, we practice our mantra of taking only what we need and litter picking as we go.

Scotland has a wealth of fossils although they are a limited resource. The thing about fossils is that if you don't preserve them, they are washed away in the ever-present rain. Scotland was once a subtropical country, leaving behind carboniferous crinoids and all sorts of juicy plant matter.

If you head north to Skye, you might even catch a  glimpse of some 225 million year old dinosaur footprints

If you find dinosaur footprints anywhere else in Scotland, Edinburgh Geological Society kindly request that you let them know. If you like fossils, you might also like reading about that time scientists found a new dinosaur species in England.

The UK Has a Rich Fossil Heritage

Fossils from Southern Scotland can date as far back as 330 million years. These rocks were here BEFORE the dinosaurs. Both the Isle of Skye and the Isle of Wight (Southern England) have dinosaur footprints you can visit though, so you don't miss out!

Learn About Dinosaur Hunting in the UK on The Stone Circle Rock Blog!

Scientists recently discovered a new species of dinosaur on the Isle of Wight. You can read all about it on our blog.

Dinosaurs also used to live up in the north of Scotland on the Isle of Skye. If you visit, you can still hunt their footprints to this day! Read about the dinosaurs on Skye here.
