This piece of galena did not come from our rock hunts in Scotland. Oddly, though, it does look like it may have come from the area we collect it from. Though galena deposits in the UK are kind of similar. Unfortunately there is no blue john attached.
So yes, although we find this material often, we did not find this piece. It arrived in an old crystal collection. We bought it at auction but it was a UK collector so it is likely UK galena.
This is the material they use to make lead ore. It is fine to have in your house. Don't crush it up and snort it, though that goes for every rock. It is the dust from this stuff that causes an issue. Otherwise it is fine on your shelf.
The other minerals in this piece are most definitely quartz, possibly quartzite, a material that looks al ot like sandstone, and iron oxides giving an orange colour. It weighs 54g.
