Chalcopyrite is the natural version of peacock ore. It has not been grown in a lab but rather was collected by the rock hunting team at The Stone Circle. We picked this piece up down in Dumfries & Galloway at the beginning of the year (2025). We picked it up because the crystals are spectacular.
Personally I have not seen this kind of copper mineral balanced on an iron mineral before. I didn't actually know it was possible... but here we are. There are patches of red ochre indicating hematite in the mix of minerals somewhere. Asides from that there is trace evidence of a quartzite material which is where the chalcopyrite has formed. It looks like it has been smushed together somehow.
We make sure to stay away from protected mine sites when we are hunting for rocks in Scotland.
